Burkittsville, MD September 18, 2004

I was out for some dry weather riding, that's all. I like to fill up the tank and then just keep picking turns I haven't taken before and see where I end up. Today I picked a really nice sequence that led to sweeter and sweeter riding. I found a sign for Burkittsville and remembered the Blair Witch Project and figured, what the hell. I made a couple more turns and came across this scene. What is depicted is a swath created by a tornado that ended up taking out the house shown in the first row of pictures, above.

Destruction Up Close

This area is about a mile from the scene above. There's a mountain range between the two spots. It looks like the tornado must have done damage on one side and then jumped over the mountain and wiped out the other side.

Anniversary (almost) of Antietam

I hadn't realized it when I set out, but today is 142 years and a day after Antietam.
